Why Blog in Law School

Hello all! I wanted to write a blog about… well, why I decided to blog in the first place. I started blogging a little over a year ago (how exciting!) and I thought it would be a perfect time to talk about why “Legally Complicated” came into existence. I will recap my story in a few sentences for those who may or may not know about it and then spill the beans as to why I love blogging.

 

I felt alone going through the application process because I had no friends or family interested in going to law school or who were lawyers. Thankfully, I had some help from my sorority because there is a Facebook page for people who are pre-law, law students, J.D., and lawyers. I found my mentor on that page and if it was not for her love and support, I am certain I would not be where I am today. Prior to law school, I also looked at some popular blogs, such as Brazen and Brunette and The Legal Duchess. These were very helpful blogs I utilized on my journey to law school. I enjoyed these blogs because I was able to see the life of a law student, and I seeing their tips based on their experiences is what I needed to shape my journey.

 

With that being said, this was why I decided to blog. I want to be a resource for people in the legal field or wanting to get into the legal field because my goal is to help people throughout the application process and beyond. I aim to put myself in the shoes of my viewers and think about what would I want to know about XYZ if I was on the outside looking in. I try to have a variety of topics so that many can look at my journey and shape their own journey. I created “Legally Complicated” to give people a look into the daily life of a law student and give tips along the way of what has worked for me when I was an applicant and as a law student. Sometimes it is great to see/hear from someone who is currently going through what you will be going through in the future. That’s why I will disclose the good, the bad, and the ugly of my journey through law school.

 

This has also forced me to see how I go through law school as a student. It is like self-evaluation of myself of how I handle the process up to this point. I always get asked, “how do you have time to blog?” Well, I make time for things that are important to me. Blogging about my law school experience is important to me because I remember being in the viewers’ shoes. I remember being that lost undergrad student trying to find a law school that will say “Congratulations!”. I remember going through the struggle of being a 1L. I remember/currently going through 2L struggles. I will know in the future the struggles a 3L faces. I will know in the future what it was like to study for and take the bar exam. I will know in the future what it is like to be an attorney. Knowing how hard each of these steps is to reach an incredible goal is why I blog. There will always be a student looking for resources and guidance through people who are in the field to get an idea of what they should or should not be doing and what is to come. This blog is not meant to say, “you must do this in order to succeed as a law student.” Nor is it to say what I write about works 100% of the time and is for everyone. No, the purpose of this blog is to inform people what it is like to be a law student and in the future, what it is like to be a lawyer to hopefully provide some guidance for their journey. I will always be open to telling my story because you never know how helpful the information will be for that person. I want to be that resource for people because I remember the struggles I went through when I was in their shoes.
